Automated Passive Acoustic Tracking of Dolphins in Free-ranging Pods

چکیده
Research in passive acoustic detection and localization of marine mammals has largely focused on isolated cases of single or few individuals. However, many marine mammals, such as dolphins, characteristically aggregate in large pods. In addition, dolphins vocalize frequently, emitting broadband clicks and frequency-modulated whistles, which, coupled with a large number of individuals, further complicates the detection and localization problem. Using acoustic data collected on a high-frequency horizontal line array deployed in the Southern California Offshore Range (SCORE), automated tracking of individual dolphins within large pods is achieved by exploiting time differences of arrival and frequency-domain beamforming. Visual observations are used to corroborate acoustic localization results and to describe dolphin vocalization and group behavior patterns.

Beaked whale and dolphin tracking using a multichannel autonomous acoustic recorder.
To track highly directional echolocation clicks from odontocetes, passive hydrophone arrays with small apertures can be used to receive the same high frequency click on each sensor. A four-hydrophone small-aperture array was coupled to an autonomous acoustic recorder and used for long-term tracking of high-frequency odontocete sounds. The instrument was deployed in the spring of 2009 offshore o...
متن کاملDistributed Passive Sonar System for Performance Evaluation of Low Depth Underwater Acoustic Source Localization Using Relative Time Delay Based Techniques
This paper presents the preliminary studies of a distributed passive sonar system for the localization and tracking of underwater acoustic sources. The techniques under test are one referred to as hyperbolic and mainly developed by Carter and another proposed by the authors and based on neural network processing. Both techniques are supported on the measurement of the relative time delay of an ...
متن کاملA Permanent Automated Real-Time Passive Acoustic Monitoring System for Bottlenose Dolphin Conservation in the Mediterranean Sea
Within the framework of the EU Life+ project named LIFE09 NAT/IT/000190 ARION, a permanent automated real-time passive acoustic monitoring system for the improvement of the conservation status of the transient and resident population of bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) has been implemented and installed in the Portofino Marine Protected Area (MPA), Ligurian Sea. The system is able to det...
متن کاملRange estimation of cetaceans with compact volumetric arrays.
Passive acoustic monitoring is the method of choice to detect whales and dolphins that are acoustically active and to monitor their underwater behavior. The NATO Science and Technology Organization Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation has recently implemented a compact passive acoustic monitor (CPAM), consisting of three arrays of two hydrophones each that are combined in a fixed th...
متن کاملDescription and clustering of echolocation signals of Commerson's dolphins (Cephalorhynchus commersonii) in Bahía San Julián, Argentina.
Commerson's dolphins (Cephalorhynchus commersonii) inhabit coastal waters of Southern South America and Kerguelen Islands. Limited information exists about the acoustic repertoire of this species in the wild. Here, echolocation signals from free-ranging Commerson's dolphins were recorded in Bahía San Julián, Argentina. Signal parameters were calculated and a cluster analysis was made on 3180 re...
